How to Use a Breadboard

A breadboard lets you build and change a circuit in minutes without soldering anything, which makes it the natural home for learning and prototyping. What the holes connect to

A breadboard is full of holes that grip component legs, but they are not all separate. Inside, metal strips connect certain holes together. Understanding which holes share a strip is the whole secret to using one. Get that, and a breadboard stops being mysterious.

Rows, the centre gap, and rails

In the main area, holes are connected in short horizontal rows of five, each row separate from the next. A gap runs down the middle of the board; the rows on the left of the gap are not connected to those on the right. That gap is sized so a chip can straddle it, putting each pin in its own row. Along the long edges run the power rails, two continuous lines usually marked red for positive and blue or black for ground.

Powering the board

Connect your power source to the rails: positive to the red line and ground to the blue line. Then run short jumper wires from the rails into the rows wherever a component needs power. Many boards split the rails in the middle, so a jumper across the break keeps the whole rail live; it is worth checking with a continuity test.

Placing components and avoiding shorts

Place a component so its two legs sit in different rows, never in the same row, or you simply join its own two ends. To connect two components, put a leg of each in the same row, since that row is one electrical node. Keep leads from touching across the centre gap unless you intend it, and trim long legs so neighbouring rows do not accidentally bridge.

A breadboard is for testing, not for keeps. Vibration and warm components can loosen connections over time, so once a circuit works reliably you usually move it to a soldered board for anything permanent, such as a robot or a drone that will be handled and shaken.
