LiPo Batteries for Drones: 3S vs 4S, C-Rating, and Safety

The battery feeds the whole power train, so its voltage and current capability shape how your drone flies. Compoden's AI build assistant sizes the battery alongside your motors and ESCs, against real stock, so the pack actually matches the build. This guide explains the numbers on a LiPo label, the 3S versus 4S choice, and how to handle these packs safely.

Reading a LiPo label

A LiPo pack lists cell count as S, capacity in milliamp-hours, and a C-rating. Cell count sets voltage: each cell is nominally 3.7 V, so a 3S pack is about 11.1 V and a 4S about 14.8 V. Capacity sets how much energy is stored and roughly how long you fly. The C-rating sets how fast the pack can safely deliver that energy.

3S vs 4S: what changes

Moving from 3S to 4S raises voltage, which makes the same motor spin faster and produce more thrust and speed, at the cost of higher current draw and heat. A 4S setup suits more aggressive or heavier builds, while 3S is gentler, often cheaper, and easier on the rest of the system. Your motor and ESC must be rated for the voltage you choose.

Understanding C-rating

C-rating multiplied by capacity gives the maximum safe continuous current. A higher C-rating supports higher current draw without the pack sagging or overheating. Under-rated packs feel weak under load and degrade quickly. Match the C-rating to your motors' peak current demand, and leave headroom rather than running a pack at its absolute limit.

LiPo safety you cannot skip

Charge LiPo packs on a balance charger, never leave them charging unattended, and use a fireproof bag or container. Do not over-discharge below the safe per-cell voltage, store packs at storage charge rather than full, and stop using any pack that is puffed, punctured, or damaged. Treat heat and swelling as warnings, not minor issues.

Build it with Compoden's AI

Battery choice depends on your motors, ESCs, and frame, so it should not be picked in isolation. Describe your build to Compoden's AI build assistant and it checks cell count, capacity, and C-rating against your power train in real stock, hands you the wiring and connector details, and ships the matched kit to your door, so the pack fits the bay and the connectors mate.

Estimating flight time

Flight time depends on capacity, all-up weight, and how hard you fly. A larger capacity pack flies longer but weighs more, which eats into the gain. Hover-style flying lasts longer than aggressive flying on the same pack. Use the manufacturer's thrust and current data to estimate, and always land with reserve charge to protect the pack.

Can I use a 4S battery on a 3S build? Only if every component, especially the ESC and motors, is rated for 4S voltage. Otherwise you risk damaging the electronics.

What does the C-rating really limit? It sets the maximum safe continuous current, found by multiplying the C-rating by the capacity. Exceeding it overheats and damages the pack.

How should I store LiPo packs between flights? At storage charge, not fully charged, in a cool place and a fireproof container. Never store a damaged or puffed pack.
