Raspberry Pi Pico vs Pico W: Do You Need Wi-Fi?

Choose the Raspberry Pi Pico W if your project needs to connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth — sending data to the cloud, hosting a small web page, or talking to your phone — and choose the standard Pico if your project stays offline, because the two boards are otherwise nearly identical and the plain Pico is cheaper.

The only major difference is wireless

The Pico and Pico W share the same microcontroller, the same memory, and the same pin layout, so your code and wiring usually transfer directly. The Pico W simply adds a wireless chip for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. That single addition is the whole decision.

Side-by-side

Feature Pico Pico W
Processor & memory Same Same
Pin layout Same Same
Wi-Fi No Yes
Bluetooth No Yes
Power use Slightly lower Slightly higher when wireless is on
Cost Lower A little higher

When you need the Pico W

  • Sending sensor readings to a dashboard or cloud service.
  • Hosting a tiny web page to control your project from a phone.
  • Connecting devices wirelessly within a room.
  • Any IoT or smart-home idea.

When the plain Pico is enough

  • Standalone gadgets: clocks, displays, motor controllers, simple robots.
  • Data loggers that store readings locally.
  • Learning electronics and MicroPython without networking.

Which should you choose?

If you are unsure whether you will ever want wireless, the small price gap makes the Pico W a safe, future-proof pick — you can simply leave the radio off when you do not need it. But if you know the project is offline and you are buying several units, the plain Pico is genuinely the smarter, cheaper choice, and paying for Wi-Fi you will never switch on is wasted money.

For classroom sets or bulk hardware builds in India, many makers buy mostly Picos plus a few Pico W boards for the connected pieces. Browse both on our dev boards page.
