Setting Up ArduPilot with Mission Planner: A First Flight Guide

Loading ArduPilot and configuring it correctly is the difference between a controlled first hover and a flip on the grass. Installing firmware and connecting
Install Mission Planner on a Windows PC and connect your flight controller by USB. Use the firmware install screen to load the correct ArduPilot vehicle type, usually Copter for a multirotor. Once flashed, connect over the COM port at the right baud rate. Mission Planner should report a live link and show your board's data.
Calibrating the sensors
Work through the mandatory hardware setup in order: frame type, accelerometer, compass, and radio. Place the board level for accelerometer calibration and rotate it through each orientation when prompted. Calibrate the compass away from metal and motors. Skipping or rushing these steps is a leading cause of poor first flights, so do each one carefully.
Setting up the radio and flight modes
Run radio calibration so Mission Planner learns your transmitter's stick range, then assign flight modes to a switch. A safe starting set is Stabilize for manual hovering, Altitude Hold, and a Loiter or Position mode if you have GPS. Set up an arming and a failsafe behaviour so the aircraft has a defined response if the link is lost.
Pre-flight checks and arming
Before flying, confirm motor order and spin direction with props off, check that the artificial horizon tracks the board, and verify battery voltage and failsafe settings. Arm only in an open area, keep well clear, and never bypass the safety checks that ArduPilot runs. If the board refuses to arm, read the message rather than forcing it.

Your first hover
For the maiden flight, choose calm conditions and an open space. Arm in Stabilize, raise the throttle gently, and lift just off the ground to check it holds level. Land, review the logs in Mission Planner for warnings, and only then try height and gentle movement. Build confidence in small steps rather than chasing a long first flight.

Do I need GPS for a first ArduPilot flight? No. You can fly a first hover in Stabilize without GPS. GPS adds Loiter, Position Hold, and return-to-home for later.
Why won't Mission Planner connect to my board? Usually a wrong COM port or baud rate, or a driver issue. Confirm the port in your operating system and select the matching settings.
How important is compass calibration? Very. A poorly calibrated compass causes drift and toilet-bowling in GPS modes, so calibrate it carefully away from metal and motors.
