Every motor on your drone needs clean power from one battery, and a power distribution board is how that gets done tidily. What a power distribution board does
A power distribution board, or PDB, takes the single battery input and splits it into several outputs, one for each ESC. It gives you a clean set of solder pads instead of a tangle of spliced wires, and many boards add useful extras like voltage regulation outputs to power a flight controller, receiver, or camera at a steady voltage.
Why splitting power matters
Four or six motors all draw from one battery. Without a PDB you would have to join several ESC leads to one battery lead, which is messy, hard to inspect, and prone to bad joints. A PDB centralises this into a single board with rated copper traces, making the high-current path reliable and the build serviceable.
Built-in versus standalone boards
Many popular frames integrate the PDB into the lower plate, so the battery and ESC pads are part of the frame itself. Standalone PDBs are separate boards you mount inside the stack. Built-in boards save space and wiring on standard builds; standalone boards give flexibility when you want specific regulator outputs or current ratings the frame does not provide.
Do you actually need one?
If your frame already has an integrated PDB, you may not need a separate board at all. If it does not, a PDB is strongly recommended for any multirotor with more than a couple of ESCs. The exception is some all-in-one flight controllers that include power distribution on the board itself, which can remove the need for a discrete PDB.

Checking current and voltage ratings
If you do use a standalone PDB, confirm its continuous current rating exceeds the combined draw of all your motors, and check that any regulated outputs supply the voltage your flight controller and accessories expect. An under-rated board overheats; a wrong regulator voltage can damage electronics. Match the board to the load, not just to the frame.
