Use these for the classic fixed 5V rail that most textbooks and older schematics assume — three pins, one capacitor each side, done. Commonly used for simple supplies, teaching, and repairing equipment that already uses them. Not suitable for efficient conversion or battery work: a 7805 dropping 12V to 5V at 1A wastes 7 watts as heat and needs a heatsink, and its quiescent draw rules it out of long battery deployments.
