The MAX98357A is a mono 3W Class-D amplifier that takes I2S digital audio directly — no separate DAC needed. It is the standard way to get sound out of an ESP32, ESP32-S3 or Raspberry Pi when the audio path is already digital.
Why I2S rather than an analog amplifier
An analog amplifier (such as a PAM8403) needs the microcontroller to produce an analog signal first, via its DAC or a PWM pin. The MAX98357A accepts the digital I2S stream straight from the controller, so the signal stays digital end to end — cleaner, and simpler to wire.
Connections
Seven pins: LRC (word select), BCLK (bit clock) and DIN (data) are the three I2S lines, plus VIN and GND for power. No external MCLK is required.
Two more are optional and can be left unconnected: GAIN sets the output level (9dB by default), and SD shuts the amplifier down or selects left/right/mono channel.
The speaker connects to the green two-pole screw terminal.
