8mm NPN NO Inductive Proximity Sensor – Reliable Metal Detection

This is an 8mm inductive proximity sensor with an NPN normally open (NO) output. It detects metal objects without physical contact, making it ideal for automation, robotics, and industrial control systems. The sensor operates on a wide 5–30V DC supply and outputs a low signal when metal enters its 8mm sensing range, providing a simple interface with microcontrollers and PLCs.

Key Specifications

Specification Value
Supply Voltage 5–30 V DC
Output Type NPN Normally Open (NO)
Sensing Distance 8 mm (for mild steel)
Switching Frequency 500 Hz
Operating Temperature -25°C to 70°C
Connection 3-wire (Brown: V+, Blue: GND, Black: Output)

What You Can Build With This

  • Automated part counting on a conveyor belt
  • Metal object sorting robot arm
  • Liquid level indicator using a metal float
  • DIY speedometer by detecting gear teeth

Compatibility

This sensor works with any 5V or higher DC supply and is directly compatible with Arduino, ESP32, PLCs, and other microcontrollers. The NPN open-collector output requires a pull-up resistor (commonly 10kΩ) to read the signal; many boards have internal pull-ups you can enable. For 3.3V logic systems, use a level shifter or voltage divider to safely interface the output.

Wiring Notes

Connect the brown wire to V+ (5–30V DC), blue to GND, and black to a digital input pin. The output goes low when metal is detected, so enable a pull-up resistor to see a clean HIGH/LOW change. Current draw is minimal, making it safe for battery-powered projects.

Why Buy from Compoden

Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.

Is this compatible with Arduino Uno?

Yes, connect brown to 5V, blue to GND, black to any digital pin, and enable the pin's internal pull-up resistor in your code. No external components needed.

Can it detect stainless steel?

Yes, but the sensing distance may reduce for non-mild steels. It works best with ferrous metals; for non-ferrous, the detection range may be slightly shorter.

What does NPN NO mean?

NPN means the output transistor sinks current to ground when active, and NO (normally open) means the output is high (floating) when no metal is detected and goes low when metal triggers it.

📦 Free Setup Handoff Document Included
