VL53L1X ToF Distance Sensor - 4m Range, I2C
VL53L1X Time-of-Flight Distance Sensor — 4m Range, I2C Interface
The VL53L1X is a high-accuracy time-of-flight (ToF) laser-ranging sensor capable of measuring distances up to 4 meters. It is ideal for obstacle avoidance, gesture recognition, and robotic navigation. The sensor’s compact design and I2C interface make it easy to integrate with popular microcontrollers and single-board computers.

What You Can Build With This
- Autonomous robot obstacle avoidance system
- Touchless gesture-controlled light switch
- Liquid level monitoring in tanks
- Drone precision altitude hold and terrain following
Compatibility
The VL53L1X operates at 3.3V logic but is 5V tolerant on I2C pins, making it safe for direct connection to Arduino Uno, Mega, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and STM32 boards. It’s frequently used with motor drivers and servos in robotic applications.
Wiring Notes
Connect VIN to 3.3V, GND to ground, SDA to A4 (or ESP32 GPIO 21), and SCL to A5 (or ESP32 GPIO 22). The breakout board includes built-in 4.7kΩ pull-up resistors on I2C lines, so no external pull-ups are needed. Default I2C address is 0x29, configurable to 0x30.
Why Buy from Compoden
Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.
Is this compatible with Arduino Uno?
Yes, the VL53L1X works with Arduino Uno over I2C. Use the SparkFun VL53L1X library for easy integration.
Can it measure through glass?
The sensor uses 940nm laser light which can pass through glass, but reflections may affect accuracy. For best results, use clean, thin glass perpendicular to the sensor.
What is the maximum sample rate?
In short-range mode, the sensor can achieve up to 50 Hz sample rate. Long-range mode is slower, typically 10–20 Hz, depending on ambient light conditions.
📦 Free Setup Handoff Document Included
Every Compoden order includes a free setup handoff document — step-by-step instructions to get your component working within minutes. Download it via QR code on your package. The handoff document is also trained to help you troubleshoot the majority of problems.
