Can ChatGPT build you a plant waterer? We typed the same prompt into Soldr
Share
Part of our series testing AI tools against a live build on Soldr — the engine behind this store. Same rules as the Grok Bot post: one prompt, no retakes, screenshots straight from the session.
The prompt
"An automatic plant watering system that waters my plant when the soil gets dry." ChatGPT answers this well — it will explain capacitive vs resistive sensors, sketch out the logic, even write Arduino code. It is a genuinely good tutor, and Plus costs about US$20 a month. What it cannot do is check a shelf. Its parts list comes from training data: a sensor model that may not exist at your supplier, a pump with no price, and no way to get any of it to your door.
What Soldr did with it

Three things in that screenshot matter more than the parts themselves:
- It picked a capacitive soil sensor — the corrosion-resistant kind — without being asked.
- It flagged in Common Problems that the pump and logic run on different voltages, before we bought anything.
- Where our catalogue genuinely has no match — the water reservoir and tubing — it said "no match found" instead of inventing a product. An AI that can say "we don't stock that" is an AI whose other answers you can trust.
The buy list, from that live tray
| Part | Price |
|---|---|
| Arduino Uno R3 CH340G ATmega328P Board | ₹230 |
| Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor V2.0 | ₹55 |
| Mini Peristaltic Pump 5V DC 100ml/min | ₹120 |
| L298N Motor Driver Module | ₹180 |
| SYB-170 Mini Breadboard | ₹20 |
| Dupont Jumper Wire Kit | ₹60 |
| 9V 1A Power Supply Adapter | ₹240 |
| Total | ₹905 |
Bring your own bottle and a length of aquarium tubing (the honest gap above) and the whole machine costs less than ₹1,000, shipped across India, COD available.
When to use which
Use ChatGPT to understand the project — it is excellent at explaining why capacitive beats resistive. Use Soldr when you want the thing on your windowsill: the same prompt returns parts that exist, prices that are real, wiring for your exact board, and firmware you pay for per use (first generation free, hard-capped at ₹150) instead of a monthly subscription.
ChatGPT pricing is OpenAI's published Plus rate at time of writing, converted approximately. Soldr numbers are the live values in our deployed billing code. Screenshots are from a signed-out guest session on app.soldr.ai on the day of writing — no retakes, no staging.
