Gemini vs a weather station that actually ships
Share
Part of our series running one honest prompt through Soldr and comparing it with a general AI tool. Same rules as always: live guest session, screenshots straight from it, including the part where something went wrong.
The prompt
"A WiFi weather station with a display that shows temperature and humidity." Ask Gemini and you get a thorough, well-written guide — Google's assistant is very good at explaining ESP32 pinouts it has read about. But the parts list is still a memory of the internet, not a shelf: no live stock, no rupee prices, and the pins it quotes are whatever its training data said, which for cheap clone boards is often wrong.
What Soldr did with it
Soldr picked an ESP32-DevKitC (WiFi needs it), a DHT11 for temperature and humidity, and wiring — grounded in our own curated pin data, not a model's memory.
Then we broke it on purpose — and this is the part worth reading
We asked it to "swap the display for the 0.96 inch OLED instead." It removed the old display — and didn't add the OLED. The tray dropped to three parts:

We told it — "add the 0.96 inch OLED display to the build" — and it did, correctly, on the ESP32's real I2C pins:

Why publish our own bug? Because this is what buying from an AI should look like: when it makes a mistake, you can see it in the tray, say so in plain words, and watch it fix itself — and the defect is now logged in our tracker with a session ID. A chatbot's mistake just sits in the transcript, and you find out at the checkout of some other shop.
The buy list, from that live tray
| Part | Price |
|---|---|
| ESP32-DevKitC V4 (30-pin CP2102) | ₹400 |
| DHT11 Temperature & Humidity Sensor | ₹45 |
| SSD1306 0.96" 128×64 OLED Display | ₹240 |
| Dupont Jumper Wire Kit | ₹60 |
| Total | ₹745 |
When to use which
Gemini is a fine place to learn what a DHT11 is. Soldr is where the same sentence becomes a ₹745 box on your doorstep with wiring and firmware for the exact board in it — pay per generation (first one free, capped at ₹150), no subscription.
