Arduino L293D Motor Driver Shield – Control DC & Stepper Motors
Arduino L293D Motor Driver Shield
The Arduino L293D Motor Driver Shield lets you control up to four DC motors or two stepper motors with direction and speed control. Based on the L293D dual H-bridge IC, it provides 600mA continuous current per channel with built-in flyback protection diodes. Perfect for robotics, automation, and motorized projects that need reliable motion control.

What You Can Build With This
- Obstacle-avoiding robot car with two DC motors and ultrasonic sensor
- Automated conveyor belt model using a single motor and PWM speed control
- Remote-controlled rover with Bluetooth module and two-wheel differential drive
- CNC plotter with two stepper motors for X and Y axes
Compatibility
The L293D shield stacks directly onto Arduino Uno, Mega, and most boards with the standard header layout. It powers motors from an external supply (4.5–36V), separate from the Arduino’s 5V logic. Common pairings include the HC-05 Bluetooth module for wireless control or an ultrasonic sensor for autonomous navigation.
Wiring Notes
Connect motor power to the shield’s terminal block, ensuring polarity is correct. Motor channels 1 and 2 use Arduino pins D4 and D5 for direction, D6 (PWM) for speed; channels 3 and 4 use D7 and D8, with D9 for speed. For stepper control, D10 and D11 provide direction pulses. Keep total current below 600mA per channel; external cooling may be needed for sustained high loads.
Why Buy from Compoden
Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.
Is this compatible with Arduino Uno R4?
Yes, the shield plugs into the Uno R4’s headers with the same pinout. Ensure motor power is supplied externally, and logic voltage is 5V.
Can I power the shield directly from the Arduino’s 5V pin?
No. The L293D needs a separate motor power supply (4.5–36V) connected to the terminal block. Using the Arduino’s 5V may not provide enough current and can damage the board.
How many stepper motors can it control simultaneously?
It can control two bipolar stepper motors (4 wires each) using all four H-bridge channels. Unipolar steppers can also be driven with appropriate wiring.
📦 Free Setup Handoff Document Included
Every Compoden order includes a free setup handoff document — step-by-step instructions to get your component working within minutes. Download it via QR code on your package. The handoff document is also trained to help you troubleshoot the majority of problems.
