Magnetorquer Attitude Control Demo Kit: Simulate CubeSat Motion with Arduino Mega

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 6-8 hrs Age: 18-21 Skill: Closed-Loop Magnetic Attitude Control

This advanced space simulation kit lets you build a 3-axis magnetorquer system that actively controls orientation by generating torque against Earth’s magnetic field — exactly how many small satellites maintain attitude. Using an Arduino Mega, three L298N-driven copper coils, and a high-precision ICM-20948 IMU, you’ll create a tabletop CubeSat attitude demo that reads real sensor data and drives corrective torques in real time. Perfect for final-year aerospace or electronics engineering projects, Smart India Hackathon challenges, and satellite club demonstrations.

What You'll Build

A fully functional closed-loop attitude control system. You’ll mount three orthogonally-wound copper coils around a simulated CubeSat chassis, wire six H-bridge channels to the Arduino Mega, and integrate the ICM-20948 IMU to measure orientation. The OLED displays live Euler angles and coil currents. When you tilt the platform, the system generates opposing magnetic dipole moments to restore the reference attitude — demonstrating magnetorquer stabilization principles used in real spacecraft.

What You'll Learn

  • Implement PID control for magnetic torque generation in three axes
  • Interface 9-axis IMU (ICM-20948) and fuse accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer data
  • Drive high-current inductive loads safely using L298N H-bridges and flyback diodes
  • Monitor power consumption and torque efficiency with INA219 current sensors

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is designed for advanced engineering students and space enthusiasts. B.Tech ECE, EEE, and Aerospace final-year project teams will find it directly applicable to ISRO Student Satellite challenges or Smart India Hackathon space tracks. IIT, NIT, VIT, and BITS Pilani satellite clubs use similar setups for ground demonstrations. Ambitious CBSE Class 12 students with strong Arduino and physics skills can tackle it as a mentored project.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code on the box to chat with our AI companion trained on this exact project; it can walk you through wiring, code debugging, and tuning PID parameters. You can also reach us on WhatsApp for direct engineer support.

Do I need a zero-gravity environment to test the magnetorquer system?

No. The demo uses Earth’s 0.5 Gauss magnetic field and generates enough torque to rotate a lightweight platform on a desk. Use a simple pivot or low-friction bearing to reduce mechanical resistance.

Can this kit be integrated into a functional CubeSat?

This kit is a ground-based proof-of-concept. For actual spaceflight, you would need radiation-hardened, space-qualified components and compliance with CubeSat design standards. The control algorithms and magnetic torque principles are directly transferable.

Does the kit include a CubeSat structure?

The kit includes all electronics and magnetorquer coils. You will need to build a non-magnetic frame to mount the three orthogonal coils. We provide 3D-printable STL files and dimensional drawings with your purchase.

Three coil magnetorquers driven by H-bridges generate torque against Earth magnetic field for CubeSat attitude sim.
