PZEM-004T AC Energy Monitor Module 100A MODBUS-RTU
PZEM-004T AC Energy Monitoring Module – 100A Current, MODBUS-RTU
The PZEM-004T is a compact AC energy monitoring module designed for real-time measurement of electrical parameters in single-phase systems. It captures voltage, current, active power, frequency, power factor, and cumulative energy consumption with high accuracy. Engineers and makers use it to build IoT energy loggers, smart plugs, and home automation dashboards that require precise power analytics.

What You Can Build With This
- Real-time home energy monitor with Wi-Fi logging to a cloud dashboard using ESP32
- Smart plug that tracks appliance power consumption and sends alerts when usage exceeds limits
- Solar inverter output monitor to measure voltage, current, and power factor on the AC side
- Industrial energy audit tool with data export to CSV for spreadsheet analysis
Compatibility
This module uses TTL-level MODBUS-RTU (5V logic) and interfaces directly with Arduino Uno, Mega, Nano, as well as ESP8266, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi (with a USB-to-TTL converter). It requires a stable 5V DC supply for the logic and separate AC connections through the included split-core current transformer. Works seamlessly with libraries like PZEM004Tv30 for Arduino.
Wiring Notes
Connect VCC to 5V, GND to common ground, and TX/RX to microcontroller serial pins (cross-connect). If using 3.3V boards like ESP8266, add a level shifter or voltage divider on the TX line to avoid damage. The CT clamp should be snapped around the live wire only – never around neutral or both wires.
Why Buy from Compoden
Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.
Is this compatible with Arduino Uno?
Yes. Connect the module's 5V, GND, TX, and RX to the Arduino's 5V, GND, RX, and TX pins respectively. Use SoftwareSerial library for communication, as the module uses MODBUS-RTU at 9600 bps.
Can it measure DC voltage or current?
No. The PZEM-004T is designed exclusively for AC circuits (single-phase, 50/60 Hz). It cannot measure DC parameters; use a dedicated DC sensor for those applications.
How do I read data with ESP32?
Since ESP32 operates at 3.3V, you must level-shift the PZEM's 5V TX line to 3.3V (a simple voltage divider with 1kΩ and 2kΩ resistors works). Use the PZEM004Tv30 library with HardwareSerial on pins 16 (RX) and 17 (TX).
