HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor Module for Arduino & Raspberry Pi
PIR Motion Detection Sensor – HC-SR501
The HC-SR501 is a passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor module that detects changes in infrared radiation from warm bodies. Widely used in security alarms, automatic lights, and presence-triggered devices, it outputs a digital HIGH signal for a configurable time when motion is sensed.
Key Specifications
| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Operating Voltage | 4.5V to 20V DC (nominal 5V) |

| Detection Angle | < 140° cone |
| Output Signal | 3.3V HIGH when triggered (TTL) |
| Delay Time | 5–200 seconds (adjustable) |
| Quiescent Current | < 50 µA |
What You Can Build With This
- Burglar alarm that triggers a buzzer and sends alerts via IoT
- Automatic corridor or staircase lighting when someone approaches
- Energy‑saving fan controller that runs only when a room is occupied
- Wildlife camera trap that captures photos on movement
Compatibility
Works directly with Arduino, ESP8266, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi. The module operates at 5V but outputs a 3.3V logic signal, so no level shifting is needed for 3.3V microcontrollers. Common pairings include relay modules to switch mains appliances, or a buzzer/LED for simple alert systems.
Wiring Notes
Connect VCC to 5V, GND to ground, and OUT to a digital input pin. Avoid placing the sensor near heat sources, windows, or in direct airflow to prevent false triggers. The onboard 3.3V regulator means the module can also be powered from a 9V battery in standalone setups.
Why Buy from Compoden
Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.
Is this compatible with Arduino Uno?
Yes, connect VCC to 5V, GND to GND, and OUT to any digital pin (e.g., D2). Use the digitalRead() function to detect motion.
How do I adjust sensitivity and delay?
There are two orange potentiometers on the module: one sets detection range (approx. 3–7m), the other sets the output HIGH duration (approx. 5–200s). Turn clockwise to increase the value.
Can it detect through walls or glass?
No, PIR sensors need a direct line of sight to detect infrared radiation changes. They cannot penetrate solid objects like walls or glass.
