J Type Thermocouple Sensor with 2m Cable | Compoden
Thermocouple Sensor J Type with 2 meter cable
A J Type thermocouple sensor built with iron-constantan alloy junctions for reliable temperature measurement in industrial and maker environments. It covers a wide -40°C to 750°C range, with the included 2-meter fiberglass insulated cable carrying a stable millivolt signal to your instrumentation. The exposed tip ensures fast response times, making it a solid choice for ovens, kilns, and process monitoring.

What You Can Build With This
- Industrial oven temperature controller with PID regulation
- Kiln monitoring system for ceramics or metal heat treatment
- Smoker or barbecue pit thermometer with data logging
- Engine exhaust gas temperature gauge for automotive diagnostics
Compatibility
The sensor outputs a low-voltage signal that requires a thermocouple amplifier or dedicated ADC. Works with Arduino and ESP32 using MAX6675 (K-type only, not for J-type) – for J-type, use an AD8495 or MAX31855J breakout. Also compatible with industrial panel meters, PLC thermocouple modules, and Raspberry Pi via I2C/SPI amplifier boards. The 2-meter lead ends in bare wires; pair with a standard mini thermocouple connector if needed.
Wiring Notes
Identify polarity: the red wire is negative (-) and the yellow or white wire is positive (+) for J-type thermocouples. Connect directly to a thermocouple amplifier input – do not extend with copper wire as it introduces cold junction errors. Keep the cable away from high-frequency power lines to avoid noise on the millivolt signal.
Why Buy from Compoden
Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.
Is this compatible with Arduino?
Yes, but you need an appropriate amplifier. J-type thermocouples are not directly compatible with the popular MAX6675 (K-type). Use an AD8495 analog output amplifier or a MAX31855J digital converter board, both easily interfaced with Arduino's analog or SPI pins.
Can I cut the cable or extend it?
Cutting the thermocouple wire alters the junction properties and introduces measurement errors. Extensions should use J-type thermocouple extension wire with identical thermal characteristics, not ordinary copper wire. The 2-meter length is sufficient for most installations.
What is the difference between J-type and K-type thermocouples?
J-type uses iron-constantan alloy and is suitable for oxidizing atmospheres up to 750°C. K-type (chromel-alumel) handles higher temperatures (up to 1250°C) but oxidizes faster at very high heat. J-type is often preferred in industrial processes below 750°C due to lower cost and stable output.
