Gesture Recognition Wand Kit v2 – Build a Lidar Mapping Robot with Arduino Mega and ROS

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 15-20 hours Age: 21-24 Skill: Robotics system integration

This kit empowers you to build a mobile robot that maps its environment in real time using a LIDAR sensor and responds to your hand gestures. From final-year capstone projects to Smart India Hackathon prototypes, this platform delivers hands-on experience with sensor fusion, PID control, and ROS-based occupancy grid mapping. You’ll assemble a fully autonomous base and a wireless gesture wand, then use the included AI companion to bring the entire system to life.

What You'll Build

You’ll create a 2D mapping robot that scans its surroundings with an RPLidar A1 and builds an occupancy grid on a companion Linux system. The connected gesture-recognition wand, housing the MPU6050, lets you command the robot’s motion via hand movements. The chassis uses two DC motors with optical encoders and Arduino Mega running a precise PID velocity controller, while the power module supplies regulated voltage from a sealed lead-acid battery.

What You'll Learn

  • Fuse MPU6050 inertial data with RPLidar scans for robust localization and gesture detection
  • Implement closed-loop PID motor control using LM393 encoder feedback on Arduino Mega
  • Run ROS nodes on an external Raspberry Pi (not included) to generate real-time occupancy grid maps
  • Design gesture recognition algorithms using accelerometer and gyroscope data streams

Who This Kit Is For

This advanced kit is designed for engineering undergraduates and researchers — especially B.Tech ECE/EEE students working on capstone projects, Smart India Hackathon teams needing a quick prototyping base, and robotics enthusiasts at NITs, IIITs, and private universities. If you’ve already worked with Arduino and want to step into ROS-based mapping and gesture control, this is your next challenge.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code on the box to launch the AI companion trained on every wire, sensor, and ROS node in this kit. For stubborn issues, our WhatsApp support is ready to step in.

Do I need a Raspberry Pi to run the RPLidar?

Yes, the kit includes Arduino Mega for motor control, but RPLidar processing and ROS mapping require an external Raspberry Pi (any Pi 3/4/5) or a Linux laptop. The AI companion provides ready-to-use ROS node templates and setup scripts, so you won’t be stuck at the command line.

Can I control the robot wirelessly with the wand?

The gesture wand is built with the MPU6050 and can communicate wirelessly if you add a Bluetooth or RF module (like HC-05, not included). The kit gives you the complete sensing and actuation base; wireless connectivity is a natural extension for B.Tech project submissions or hackathon demos.

Is the soldering iron suitable for the encoder boards?

Absolutely. The included 25W iron and solder wire are ideal for soldering LM393 encoder modules, motor driver terminals, and prototype boards. We recommend practicing on spare wire if you’re new to soldering—the AI companion includes a quick soldering primer unique to this kit’s components.

Gesture — RPLidar + ROS on Raspberry Pi builds occupancy grid map. Arduino Mega handles motor PID.
