Build a Secure Smart Grid Node for Automated Meter Reading with Arduino Portenta C33

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 10-12 hrs Age: 25+ Skill: Industrial IoT Prototyping

Energy and water utilities across India are migrating to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). With this kit, you prototype a production-grade node that reads pulse outputs from electricity, water, and gas meters, cryptographically signs the data, and posts it to a utility’s REST API — mimicking a real smart grid data concentrator.

What You'll Build

You’ll assemble a DIN rail-mounted industrial node that acquires consumption data from multiple utility meters via pulse counting. The Arduino Portenta C33 processes the data, timestamps it with the DS3231 RTC, signs it using the onboard secure element, and transmits the signed payload to a cloud API. The 0.96-inch OLED displays live readings, and all data is logged to a MicroSD card for offline verification.

What You'll Learn

  • Interfacing industrial pulse-output sensors (PZEM-004T energy monitor, YF-S201 flow sensors) to a microcontroller
  • Implementing cryptographic signing of sensor data using Arduino Portenta C33’s secure element and connecting to a utility-grade REST API
  • Designing reliable power management with a buck converter and integrating an RTC for accurate time-stamping
  • Prototyping on a PCB perfboard and housing the system in a DIN rail enclosure for field-like deployment

Who This Kit Is For

This kit targets final-year B.Tech ECE/EEE students building smart grid capstone projects, Smart India Hackathon participants tackling AMI challenges, and industry professionals prototyping an industrial IoT data concentrator. It assumes prior experience with Arduino and soldering.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code to start a conversation with the AI companion trained on this exact project. If you need human help, our WhatsApp support is available within hours.

Does this kit include the meters themselves?

No, you use your own electricity, water, or gas meters that provide pulse outputs. The kit includes sensors to interface with those pulses (energy monitor, flow sensors, current sensor).

What utility API does the example code target?

The AI companion guides you through a generic REST API structure. You can adapt it to any Indian utility’s AMI head-end system, such as UPPCL or MSEDCL, by changing the endpoint and authentication.

Is the hardware key for signing already provisioned on the Portenta C33?

The Portenta C33’s secure element (SE050) is used as the hardware root of trust. You’ll generate and store your own keys during the build process using Arduino’s crypto libraries, with step-by-step instructions from the AI companion.

C33 reads power + water + gas meters via pulse counters. Signs readings with hardware key and posts to utility API.
