MAX30100/30102 Heart Rate & SpO2 Sensor Module | Compoden
MAX30100/30102 Heart Rate Oxygen Pulse Sensor
The MAX30100 and MAX30102 are integrated pulse oximetry and heart-rate monitor modules. Each combines two LEDs (red and infrared), a photodetector, and low-noise analog signal processing on a single chip. You can measure both heart rate (bpm) and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) through I2C communication, making it suitable for wearable health devices and educational biometrics projects.

What You Can Build With This
- DIY smart watch for continuous health monitoring
- Portable pulse oximeter with an OLED display
- IoT patient monitoring system using ESP32 and cloud dashboards
- Fitness tracker logging SpO2 and heart rate to an SD card
Compatibility
The sensor communicates over I2C and works with 3.3V logic controllers such as ESP32, Raspberry Pi Pico, and most STM32 boards. For 5V boards like Arduino Uno, add a bidirectional logic-level shifter on SDA and SCL lines. It pairs well with small OLED screens and 3.3V LDO regulators for compact wearable builds.
Wiring Notes
Supply 1.8V to the VDD pin and 3.3V to the VLED pin. Do not power both from the same 3.3V rail, as the internal LED driver expects separate voltage domains. Use 4.7kΩ pull-up resistors on SDA and SCL, tied to 1.8V. Place a 10µF bypass capacitor close to the sensor for stable readings.
Why Buy from Compoden
Every component is sourced from verified suppliers and tested for compatibility before listing. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. Ships from Bengaluru in 3-5 days. If defective on arrival, replace within 7 days.
Is this compatible with Arduino Uno?
Yes, but the MAX30100’s I2C bus operates at 1.8V logic. Use a logic-level converter (e.g., BSS138-based) on SDA and SCL lines when connecting to a 5V Uno. Many breakout boards include on-board level shifters, so check your specific module.
Does this sensor require external LEDs?
No. The MAX30100 and MAX30102 have integrated red and infrared LEDs inside the package. Just connect power and I2C; no external light sources are needed.
Can I power it directly from a 3.3V supply?
You must not supply 3.3V to the VDD pin, which requires a regulated 1.8V. The LED driver (VLED) can take 3.3V. Use a small low-dropout regulator to derive 1.8V from a battery or 3.3V rail.
