Beehive Foraging Insight Kit - Multi-Sensor Hive Intelligence with Arduino Mega

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 6-8 hrs Age: 18-21 Skill: Environmental data correlation & embedded logging

Beekeepers and field researchers often rely on guesswork to understand when bees begin foraging. This kit changes that by giving your apiary a voice. You'll assemble a station that continuously measures hive weight changes, internal sound intensity, and the ambient temperature-humidity-pressure profile. The system logs everything to a microSD card with precise RTC timestamps, so you can later correlate weather patterns exactly with foraging surges-no cloud, no subscription, just raw insight.

What You'll Build

A standalone Arduino Mega-based monitor that slides under a standard Langstroth box. The load-cell platform captures weight fluctuations of less than 20 grams, the MAX4466 electret microphone records hive hum intensity every minute, and the DHT22 + BMP280 pair gives you a full atmospheric snapshot. All readings appear on the OLED and are written to a timestamped CSV-ready for your custom Python or spreadsheet analysis of when your bees fly out.

What You'll Learn

  • Strain-gauge signal conditioning with the HX711 ADC and calibration for precise weight tracking
  • Capturing and processing analog audio envelopes from a high-gain MEMS-grade microphone breakout
  • Reading IC barometric pressure, humidity and temperature sensors simultaneously on a single bus
  • Building a bulletproof datalogger with the DS3231 RTC and SPI-interfaced MicroSD card module

Who This Kit Is For

This is built for B.Tech ECE/EEE students tackling Smart India Hackathon agricultural challenges, final-year project makers from NIT, VIT or BITS campuses, and progressive apiarists running ATL Tinkering Labs as outreach. If you've ever wanted to turn a raw apiary into a data stream, the sensor suite and logging backbone are already matched and solder-ready for your prototype board.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project - accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

The AI companion walks you through each connection and code block; you can also send a WhatsApp photo of your wiring to our team and get a direct answer within hours.

Can this kit detect swarming as well as foraging?

Yes-rapid weight drop combined with a sudden rise in microphone amplitude often indicates a swarm. The timestamps let you align these events with the BMP280 pressure trends for early warning.

Do I need an external power supply for the apiary?

A 5V power bank connected to the Arduino Mega's USB port will run the logger for over 24 hours. For multi-day unattended logging, we recommend a small solar panel and Li-ion shield (not included).

Is the data readable on a Mac or Linux system?

Absolutely. The microSD stores a plain CSV file with date, time, weight, sound level, temperature, humidity and pressure columns. No proprietary software needed-import directly into Python, R, Excel or Google Sheets.

Data Centre - Hive weight + sound + external weather correlated to find weather conditions that trigger foraging.
