Predict ISS Passes in Real Time with the Asset Location Tracker Kit v2 - GPS & ESP8266 Powered

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 5-6 hrs Age: 18-21 Skill: ISS pass prediction

Hand-built satellite tracking is no longer a dream confined to mission control rooms. With this kit, you assemble a portable device that uses your real-time GPS coordinates, pulls live TLE data via WiFi, and instantly calculates the International Space Station's next pass - showing azimuth, elevation, and exact time on a crisp OLED display. It's a fusion of embedded systems, orbital mechanics, and IoT connectivity in one hands-on project.

What You'll Build

After soldering and flashing the ESP8266, you'll hold a self-contained ISS pass predictor. It wakes up, acquires your location from the NEO-6M GPS module, connects to your WiFi network, downloads the latest two-line element sets for the ISS, and computes the next visible pass. Azimuth, elevation angle, and pass time appear on the 0.96-inch OLED - ready for you to step outside and spot the station.

What You'll Learn

  • Interfacing a NEO-6M GPS module over UART and parsing NMEA sentences
  • Fetching and decoding TLE data from the web using the ESP8266's WiFi stack
  • Implementing satellite pass prediction algorithms (SGP4) in embedded C++
  • Displaying real-time computed data on an I2C OLED screen

Who This Kit Is For

B.Tech ECE and EEE students developing embedded systems or satellite communication skills, participants in Smart India Hackathon space-tech challenges, and members of IIT/NIT/VIT/BITS satellite clubs. The kit also aligns perfectly with advanced hobbyists who have prior experience with microcontrollers and soldering and want to merge GPS, WiFi, and orbital computation into a single deployable unit.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project - accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code inside the box to activate your AI build companion, which knows every trace and code line of this exact project. You can also drop a WhatsApp message for direct support from Compoden's engineers.

Do I need a separate antenna for GPS?

No. The NEO-6M module includes a built-in ceramic patch antenna that works well outdoors. For indoor testing, we recommend placing the kit near a window.

Can the tracker predict passes for other satellites?

Yes. The preloaded firmware uses the ISS's NORAD ID, but you can modify the code to input any satellite's TLE from Celestrak. The AI companion includes sample code for this modification.

Is soldering experience required?

Basic soldering skill is necessary since this kit includes a soldering iron and requires assembly on prototype boards. The AI companion's video snippets walk you through each joint, making it manageable even if you're out of practice.

Asset - NEO-6M GPS gets location. ESP8266 fetches TLE data and computes next ISS pass azimuth, elevation and time.
