Build a Touch-Sensitive Zither with Arduino Mega & FSR Pressure Sensors

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 6-8 hrs Age: 18-21 Skill: Sensor-Driven Audio Synthesis

Transform a simple wooden zither into an expressive electronic instrument where the pressure of each finger pluck controls the velocity of a sampled note, letting you perform with nuance typically found only in high-end digital pianos. The six FSR 402 force-sensitive resistors sit directly under each string, capturing minute differences in touch intensity. An Arduino Mega reads these analog values, maps them to a velocity range, and commands a DFPlayer Mini to play corresponding sound files from a microSD card — all with zero perceptible latency.

What You'll Build

An acoustic-looking zither that produces layered, high-quality sound whenever you press a string, with dynamics based on how hard you press. The built-in PAM8403 amplifier and 3W speaker make it completely self-contained, ready for solo practice, jam sessions, or stage performance. You can load your own sound banks onto the 8GB microSD card to switch between piano, guitar, synth, or percussion tones, turning the zither into a versatile pressure-controlled MIDI-like controller.

What You'll Learn

  • Calibrating FSR 402 force sensors for musical touch response
  • Mapping analog pressure values to velocity-sensitive sample triggering with Arduino Mega
  • Integrating DFPlayer Mini serial control for on-demand audio playback
  • Assembling and soldering a multi-sensor interface on prototyping board

Can I use my own zither frame design?

Yes, you can mount the FSR strips under the strings of any flat-board zither. Just ensure each sensor aligns under a string and makes firm contact when pressed. The firmware expects six analog inputs from the FSRs.

Do I need prior soldering experience?

Yes, this is an advanced kit; you'll solder header pins, resistor dividers, capacitors, and wire connections on two prototyping boards. A soldering iron and wire are included, but if you're new to soldering, practice on scrap first.

Can I add more strings or sensors?

The Arduino Mega provides ample analog inputs, so you can extend to more FSR sensors. You'll need to modify the code to map additional channels and perhaps expand the sample bank on the microSD card.

FSR strips under zither strings measure touch pressure and trigger DFPlayer sample with matching velocity.
