ESP32 Hydroponics Nutrient Monitor Kit — Weather-Aware Irrigation Controller

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 6-8 hrs Age: 21-24 Skill: IoT Automation & Weather Integration

Build a hydroponics controller that fetches live weather forecasts via ESP32, reads soil moisture from three probes, and decides whether to run pumps or skip irrigation when rain is predicted. This kit turns a common hydroponic setup into a weather-responsive, self-logging system that saves water and nutrients.

What You'll Build

You'll assemble a fully enclosed controller mounted near your grow trays. The ESP32 pulls data from a free weather API every hour. If rain is forecast within the next 12 hours, irrigation is postponed even if soil moisture drops. Otherwise, the system checks three moisture sensors and activates a 4-channel relay to start pumps only when needed. An OLED displays real-time sensor readings, next rain window, and log status, while a microSD card stores timestamped irrigation events using a DS3231 RTC.

What You'll Learn

  • Programming ESP32 to fetch and parse weather API JSON over Wi-Fi, handling timeouts and fallback logic
  • Multiplexing three soil moisture sensors and calibrating thresholds for hydroponic nutrient solutions
  • Designing a relay driver circuit with flyback diodes (1N4007) and a buck converter (LM2596) for 12V pump control
  • Logging sensor and irrigation data with timestamps using DS3231 RTC and MicroSD module, enabling long-term crop analysis

Who This Kit Is For

Ideal for B.Tech ECE/EEE final-year students building IoT agriculture projects, Smart India Hackathon teams, and hydroponics growers who want to automate irrigation based on real weather data. You should have prior soldering experience and familiarity with the Arduino IDE or PlatformIO. The system integrates seamlessly into existing NFT or drip hydroponic setups.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Access the AI build companion via the QR code in the kit; for real-time help, message us on WhatsApp and we’ll guide you through the exact step.

Does this kit require an internet connection to run?

The ESP32 needs Wi-Fi to fetch weather forecasts. Without internet, the system defaults to soil-moisture-only irrigation using the last stored schedule, so your plants stay watered.

Can I use this with a different pump voltage or AC devices?

The included 4-channel relay module handles up to 250V AC. For 12V DC pumps, the LM2596 buck converter steps down from the 12V adapter. Ensure the pump current does not exceed the relay rating (10A).

Is the weather API subscription included?

We provide sample code for the OpenWeatherMap free tier, which you can set up with your own API key. Detailed instructions are in the build guide, and the AI companion can help if you face any issues.

Hydroponics — ESP32 fetches weather API forecast. Skips irrigation if rain expected. Otherwise uses soil moisture trigger.
