Build a Solar-Powered LoRa Air Quality Monitoring Node with Arduino

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Intermediate Build Time: 4-5 hrs Age: 15-18 Skill: Wireless sensor network deployment and environmental data logging

Deploy a self-sustaining remote node that sniffs out air pollutants, tracks microclimate shifts, and beams that data several kilometres over LoRa — without ever touching a power outlet. In 4–5 hours you solder, assemble, and code an Arduino Nano tightly coupled with MQ-135, DHT22, BMP280, and RA-02 LoRa, then seal it inside a waterproof enclosure with a solar-recharged 18650 battery pack. The result is a field-ready environmental monitor ideal for campus air audits, smart agriculture pilot studies, or simply owning a piece of wireless sensing infrastructure.

What You'll Build

A weatherproof LoRa end-node that measures ammonia, CO, benzene, smoke (MQ-135), temperature and humidity (DHT22), and barometric pressure (BMP280). The Arduino Nano reads all three sensors, packages the data into a compact structure, and pushes it out via RA-02 LoRa every 5 minutes. Power comes from a 6 V solar panel feeding two 18650 cells through a TP4056 charge controller, so the node can run outdoors indefinitely once positioned. You can pair it with any LoRa receiver on the same frequency to log or visualise the data.

What You'll Learn

  • Interface multiple I2C/SPI sensors with Arduino Nano simultaneously
  • Configure and transmit structured data packets with RA-02 LoRa module (SX1278)
  • Implement solar-rechargeable battery management with TP4056 and 18650 cells
  • Enclose and weatherproof a field-grade wireless sensor node

Who This Kit Is For

CBSE Class 11–12 students designing a physics or computer science investigatory project on air quality monitoring. B.Tech ECE/EEE undergraduates prototyping a low-power wireless sensor network for their major project. Smart India Hackathon teams needing a rugged LoRa node for environmental hackathons. ATL Tinkering Lab mentors who want their students to experience real-world IoT deployment. IIT, NIT, VIT, and BITS Pilani students building a campus air dashboard can start here.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code on the box to launch the AI companion trained specifically for this kit. If you prefer a human, WhatsApp us — a real project builder will reply.

Do I need a LoRa gateway to see the data?

This kit builds only the transmitter node. You will need a receiver — any Arduino + RA-02 running a matching sketch — to capture and display the readings. We offer a companion receiver kit separately.

Can this node be used for agricultural field monitoring?

Absolutely. The MQ-135 detects ammonia and smoke often linked to fertiliser and burning, while DHT22 and BMP280 provide microclimate data essential for crop health. The solar power design keeps it running for months in an open field.

Is soldering difficult for a first-timer?

The kit includes a soldering iron, solder wire, and detailed visual guides. The AI companion will walk you through each joint; many of our first-time solderers complete the build successfully within the stated time.

MQ-135, DHT22 and BMP280 readings packaged and transmitted via RA-02 LoRa every 5 minutes from solar node.
