Use this when a battery project must last months rather than days — it idles at about 60 microamps, where the common AMS1117 idles at 5 to 11 milliamps and flattens a cell on its own. Commonly used for deep-sleep sensor nodes, coin-cell projects and long-deployment ESP32 builds. Not suitable above 1A, and not suitable where input and output are far apart — an LDO burns the difference as heat rather than converting it. Key specs: 3.5-6V in, 3.3V out, 1A, 60uA quiescent. Alternative: a buck converter if you are dropping from 12V, where an LDO would waste most of the energy.
