ESP32 & Arduino LoRa Frost Monitoring Kit - Track Soil Profile Temperature at Six Depths

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 12-15 hrs Age: 25+ Skill: LoRa mesh networking & low-power sensor design

In vineyards, orchards, and research plots, frost moves downward through the soil in a predictable front. Capturing that progression in real time-wirelessly-lets you protect crops and validate models. With this kit you build exactly that: six waterproof DS18B20 probes at staggered depths, each paired with an Arduino Nano and RA-02 LoRa module, feeding time-stamped temperatures to a central ESP32 gateway.

What You'll Build

You assemble six long-range sensor nodes that wake every few minutes, read a DS18B20, and transmit via 433 MHz LoRa to a single ESP32. The gateway collects and displays serial data, loggable to an SD card or pushed to a dashboard. When placed in a borehole or soil pit, the system reveals where the frost line is, how fast it moves, and when it reverses-critical data for frost fans, irrigation scheduling, and climate research.

What You'll Learn

  • Designing a LoRa star network with node addressing and sleep-wake cycles
  • Interfacing multiple DS18B20 1-Wire sensors and managing parasitic power
  • Configuring RA-02 modules for reliable long-range transmission outdoors
  • Building battery-powered nodes with TP4056 charging and deep-sleep optimisation

Who This Kit Is For

Agricultural researchers mapping soil frost dynamics, viticulturists in Nashik or Himachal, B.Tech Agri-engineering students building Smart India Hackathon solutions on precision farming, and ATL Tinkering Labs running advanced sensor workshops at IITs, NITs, or BITS. It assumes comfort with Arduino IDE, basic soldering, and patience to deploy a field-ready sensor network.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project - accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code on the kit box to start your AI companion. It walks you through every soldering point, library install, and LoRa register setting. If you need a human, message us on WhatsApp and a Compoden engineer will reply within hours.

Can I add more than six sensor nodes?

The ESP32 gateway firmware supports up to 12 node addresses by default. You can extend further by adjusting the time-slot protocol, but six is optimal for a single soil borehole where 15 cm spacing is typical.

How far apart can the nodes and gateway be placed?

With the 433 MHz antennas and line-of-sight, expect 800-1200 metres. In a vineyard setting with low vegetation, 300-500 metres is realistic. Test in your exact terrain after assembly.

What do I need to visualise the data?

The gateway outputs serial data that you can log with PuTTY or a Python script. For a dashboard, we provide a companion guide to push readings into a free ThingSpeak or Ubidots account, which you can view from any device.

Brewing - Six DS18B20 nodes at different depths connected over LoRa to monitor frost layer progression in soil profile.
