Server Room Temperature Monitor Kit v7 – Build a 2-Year Battery LoRa Sensor Node

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 8-10 hours Age: 25+ Skill: Low-power IoT design

In a server room, temperature spikes can wipe entire disk arrays before you notice. This kit turns you into the person who builds a silent, solar-recharged monitor that sends alerts over kilometres without ever touching the grid. The Arduino Portenta C33 sleeps at 10µA, wakes every 15 minutes, reads precision sensors, transmits via LoRa, and sleeps again — for two full years on a handful of 18650 cells.

What You'll Build

A fully weatherproof LoRa sensor node that reports temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure from inside a server room or remote facility. The node operates autonomously, recharges from a small solar panel, and communicates with any LoRaWAN gateway up to several kilometres away. You’ll position it, seal the enclosure, and watch data stream to your dashboard.

What You'll Learn

  • Deep-sleep power management on the Arduino Portenta C33 to achieve microamp-level standby
  • LoRa wireless communication using the SX1278 module for long-range data transmission
  • Solar charging circuit design with TP4056 and 18650 Li-ion cells for year-round off-grid operation
  • Environmental sensor integration (DHT22 and BMP280) and data logging over radio

Who This Kit Is For

This kit is tailored for B.Tech ECE final-year students building a reliable data centre monitoring prototype for their capstone, IoT engineers in Bengaluru and Hyderabad deploying sensor networks, and participants in Smart India Hackathon hardware tracks needing a long-range, low-power wireless node. It’s also ideal for makers maintaining their own server setups.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Open the AI companion via the QR code — it knows the exact wiring and code for this kit. If it still doesn't resolve, drop a WhatsApp to the number inside the box for direct help.

Does this kit include a LoRa gateway?

No, the kit includes the sensor node only. It transmits data in standard LoRaWAN format, compatible with any gateway like a Raspberry Pi-based ChirpStack or commercial ones.

Can the solar panel charge the 18650 cells indoors?

The 6V 2W panel works with ambient office light but performs best near a window. The TP4056 manages charging; the batteries hold 2 years of runtime without any sun once fully charged, so periodic indoor light is sufficient.

What programming is required to set the 15-minute wake interval?

The AI companion provides pre-configured Arduino code using the Portenta’s RTC alarm. You’ll simply adjust a variable for wake frequency, and the companion explains the deep-sleep registers.

Data Centre — C33 deep-sleep node wakes every 15 min, reads sensors, transmits LoRa and returns to 10µA sleep. 2-year battery life.
