Monitor Your Server Room Temperature from Over 1km Away with This Raspberry Pi Zero W LoRa Kit

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 5-6 hrs Age: 18-21 Skill: LoRa Wireless Sensor Networks

When your servers generate heat, a single degree can trigger downtime. This kit lets you build a long-range wireless monitoring node that feeds temperature, humidity, and pressure data from multiple racks back to a central dashboard — without laying cables or relying on WiFi coverage in the data centre.

What You'll Build

A battery-powered sensor node using Raspberry Pi Zero W and two precision environmental sensors, transmitting data over LoRa (433MHz) to a gateway Pi. You'll have a real-time dashboard showing temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure from anywhere within a 1km+ radius. Perfect for server rooms, co-location facilities, or any critical environment where wired sensors are impractical.

What You'll Learn

  • Configuring LoRa point-to-point communication on 433MHz using RA-02 modules
  • Interfacing DHT22 and BMP280 sensors over I2C and one-wire protocols on Raspberry Pi
  • Building a battery management system with TP4056 and LiPo for autonomous operation
  • Designing a Python-based data logging and dashboard system for environmental monitoring

Who This Kit Is For

This advanced kit is built for engineering students tackling IoT capstone projects, hackathon participants at Smart India Hackathon requiring long-range sensor networks, and final-year B.Tech ECE/EEE students prototyping industrial monitoring solutions. It's also ideal for IT professionals who manage small data centres and want a reliable, wireless environmental monitoring system without enterprise-level costs.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code on the box to launch the AI build companion, trained on this exact kit. It walks you through every step. If you still need help, message us on WhatsApp for human support.

Do I need a separate Raspberry Pi for the gateway?

Yes, this kit includes the sensor node components. The gateway requires an additional Raspberry Pi (any model with GPIO) and another RA-02 module. You can also use a LoRaWAN gateway if you have one.

How do I extend the range beyond 1km?

The RA-02 supports up to 2km in open air with proper antenna placement. For server rooms with thick walls, raising the antenna higher and using a directional antenna can improve signal.

Can I power the node from mains instead of battery?

Yes, you can connect a 5V micro USB supply to the Pi Zero W while keeping the TP4056 as a UPS backup, or replace the LiPo with a permanent 3.7V regulator. The kit includes both battery and charging module for portability.

Data Centre — Pi Zero W reads environment sensors and transmits over RA-02 LoRa to a gateway Pi. 1km+ range.
