Automatic Music Transcriber Kit with ESP32 – Convert Any Tune to MIDI in Real Time

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 15-20 hours Age: 25+ Skill: Audio DSP & Embedded MIDI Generation

Turn any acoustic melody into a clean MIDI file – no piano keyboard, no DAW, just a microphone and an ESP32. This kit captures live audio through a MAX9814 electret mic, runs an FFT-based onset and pitch detection algorithm on the ESP32, and saves the transcribed notes directly to a microSD card as a standard MIDI file. Whether you're a musician frustrated with manual transcription or an engineer exploring real-time audio DSP, you'll build a self-contained transcriber that listens, analyses, and documents every note you play.

What You'll Build

You'll construct a standalone unit with an OLED display that shows detected notes in real time, tactile buttons to start/stop recordings, and a microSD module that holds hours of MIDI data. Once assembled, you can whistle a tune, play a bansuri, or hum a melody, and your device will output a tempo-accurate MIDI file ready for editing in any music software.

What You'll Learn

  • Implementing Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on the ESP32 to extract frequency peaks in real time
  • Designing onset detection algorithms to isolate individual notes from continuous audio
  • Building a MIDI file writer that saves pitch, velocity, and duration to an SD card
  • Soldering and integrating analogue microphone amplification with digital processing on a custom PCB

Who This Kit Is For

Musicians and audio engineers who want a custom transcription tool that fits in a pocket. B.Tech ECE and EEE students tackling final-year projects in digital signal processing or embedded systems. Indie music producers and Indian classical musicians who need rapid, accurate MIDI notes from acoustic performances. Also ideal for Smart India Hackathon prototypes that bridge music and IoT.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code inside the box to chat with the AI companion, which has walked through this exact kit. If you need human help, WhatsApp us — we respond within hours, not days.

Can this transcribe polyphonic music (multiple notes at once)?

The default firmware is optimised for monophonic melodies. Advanced users can experiment with polyphonic FFT techniques, but the AI companion guides you through monophonic transcription first so you understand the entire signal chain.

Which instruments work best with this transcriber?

It captures any sustained, pitched sound: voice, flute, bansuri, violin, sarod, or even whistling. Percussive instruments with very short attacks (like tabla strokes) may need parameter tuning, but the AI companion includes calibration tips for Indian instruments.

Do I need soldering experience to build this?

The kit includes a soldering iron and all parts require through-hole soldering. The AI companion includes detailed soldering videos and a practice guide. If you've never soldered before, expect the build to take closer to 20 hours.

MAX9814 mic + ESP32 FFT detects note onsets, pitch and duration and outputs MIDI file to SD card.
