ESP32 Cyberpunk Neon Sign Controller Kit – Animated Art That Glows and Moves

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Advanced Build Time: 10-12 hrs Age: 21-24 Skill: High-voltage driver circuit design

Imagine a wall-mounted neon artwork that shifts colors, pulses to a beat, or animates in sequences you code. This kit gives you the muscle to drive real EL wire — the glowing threads behind cyberpunk fashion, sci-fi movie props, and immersive event décor — with an ESP32 microcontroller that can orchestrate four independent channels simultaneously. You'll wire MOSFET-based drivers, manage a 12V-to-120V inverter cascade, and program smooth fades, chases, or reactive patterns. It's a build that sits right at the intersection of power electronics and creative coding, turning your space into a living canvas.

What You'll Build

You'll assemble a four-channel EL wire animation controller that can switch each strand on/off, dim it via PWM, and run looping animations. The final module fits inside a compact enclosure, accepts a 12V DC input, and drives up to four meters of glowing wire in any shape you design. When you upload your first pattern to the ESP32, you'll see your custom sign sequence come alive — no relays, no noise, just pure neon-style light.

What You'll Learn

  • Driving high-voltage EL wire safely using IRF540N MOSFETs and opto-isolated logic
  • Configuring ESP32 PWM outputs for smooth multi-channel dimming and animation sequencing
  • Designing a buck converter-based power supply that steps 12V down to 5V for the microcontroller while powering inverter loads
  • Soldering a mixed-voltage project on prototype PCB with proper creepage distances and component orientation

Who This Kit Is For

B.Tech ECE/EEE students fabricating art installations for cultural fests, Smart India Hackathon teams needing eye-catching animated signage, makers at IIT/NIT/VIT/BITS who want a hardware-software crossover project, and event decor professionals prototyping custom neon-like displays. If you already know basic Arduino or ESP32 programming and want to handle real high-voltage loads, this kit is your bridge from breadboard to production-level driver design.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code on the box to get an AI companion that steps you through every connection, code line, and test point. If you prefer, ping us on WhatsApp for a human backup — we've built this project ourselves.

Can I drive longer EL wire than the 1m strips included?

The inverters handle EL wire up to about 2 meters each without significant brightness loss. You can substitute longer lengths as long as the total load per inverter stays within its rated wattage (typically 3-5W). We include 1m pieces to keep things safe and manageable.

Is the high-voltage side isolated from the ESP32?

Yes. The MOSFET gate drive circuit uses a 100Ω resistor and pull-down configuration, and the inverter's AC output is physically separated on the prototype board. You're not directly handling 120V AC during operation, but the diodes across the MOSFETs suppress any back-EMF spikes. Always follow the layout guide provided in the AI companion.

Can I program patterns without writing code from scratch?

The AI companion gives you ready-to-upload ESP32 sketches with comments showing how to modify patterns. You'll start with a pre-written fade-and-chase sequence, then tweak delays, channel mappings, and sensor inputs if you want to add interactivity (not included in basic kit, but you can extend it).

High-voltage EL wire driver modules controlled by ESP32 to create animated custom neon-style signage.
