Supercapacitor UPS System Kit with Arduino Nano – Build a Reliable Backup Power System

Every part needed, pre-tested for compatibility, with an AI build companion trained on this exact project. Shipped from Bengaluru in 3-5 days.

Difficulty: Intermediate Build Time: 4-5 hrs Age: 15-18 Skill: Power management and supercapacitor backup design

When the mains power fails, your microcontroller project shouldn’t go dark. This kit lets you build a supercapacitor-based UPS that detects voltage drops using INA219 sensors and switches to a 4-supercapacitor bank instantly via relay, keeping your Arduino Nano and connected devices running long enough to save data or trigger a graceful shutdown.

What You'll Build

You’ll assemble a compact backup power station on a PCB prototype board. The system charges four 100F 2.7V supercapacitors from a standard 5V supply, monitors input and output voltage and current with two INA219 modules, displays real-time parameters on an OLED, and cuts over to the supercapacitor bank within milliseconds of detecting a main supply failure — all governed by the Arduino Nano.

What You'll Learn

  • Accurate current and voltage sensing with INA219 via I²C
  • Supercapacitor charging and balancing circuits
  • Relay-based automatic switching logic using Arduino
  • Displaying real-time data on an OLED screen

Who This Kit Is For

This intermediate kit suits CBSE Class 11–12 students exploring power electronics in their physics or computer science projects, B.Tech ECE/EEE undergraduates building a UPS prototype for lab submissions, and participants of Smart India Hackathon needing a fast, reliable backup power demo. ATL Tinkering Labs will find it ideal for demonstrating supercapacitor energy storage in a hands-on way.

Built and Backed by Compoden

Every Compoden kit ships with an AI build companion trained on this exact project — accessible via a QR code on the box, with WhatsApp and email backup. We've spent 10 years building projects for makers, schools, and institutions across India. If a part fails because of a manufacturing defect, replace it free within 7 days.

What if I get stuck during the build?

Scan the QR code inside the box to launch the AI companion that provides step-by-step checks and wiring diagrams for this specific kit. You can also drop us a WhatsApp message for direct support from our team.

Can this UPS power a Raspberry Pi or Wi-Fi module?

The supercapacitor bank outputs 5V and is best suited for low-power Arduino projects. It can briefly power an ESP8266 but is not designed for a Raspberry Pi’s higher current draw.

Do I need an external charger for the supercapacitors?

No, the included LM2596 buck converter lets you feed a standard 5V–12V DC adapter to charge the supercapacitor bank through the circuit.

How long does the backup last once mains fail?

With a typical Arduino Nano and OLED display load, the four 100F supercapacitors can provide backup power for several minutes—enough to save data or shut down safely.

Supercapacitor bank charged from 5V supply. Provides backup power on mains failure detected by voltage monitor.
